Today there was a super cute moment where one of the local birds flew up and perched on the front porch railing.
Flew away, came back with a friend, they were clearly chirping. I could see it through the window, it was obvious that they were, but between the constant tinnitus, the dryer running, and the window between us,
I couldn't hear them.
I mention this to Jeff. He's surprised. "I don't have my ears in" "no but you really CAN'T hear that?"
The bird, still being cute, obligingly chirps again >o
And I pay attention, but nope. Can't hear it.
This is the baseline now.
Like my vision is good enough for most things but I can't read without the glasses unless the font is pretty big and distinct.
(I have actually stopped myself from "zooming in" with my fingers on printed menus.)
This is what 51.75 looks like.
Hearing damage, wrinkly skin, some visual deterioration, some scars inside and out, emotional and physical.
New competencies.
New self knowledge.
New understanding.
It is what it is. And that's okay.
Getting older is still so much better than the alternative.

Thanks! That made me smile. It's one thing to know intellectually that friends are also going through aging stuff, and another to hear someone else's concrete example.

It’s great to have that understanding and acceptance. I’m still fighting it. “Nooo I don’t need different glasses for the computer!” Never mind the headaches I’m giving myself, trying to read through the dense thicket of floaters. “Nooo I just STRAINED my thumb!” Except the swelling at the joints hasn’t gone down in more than a year and I can’t bend it very far.
Ah, the human condition.

And after I broke my hand NYE 2016, I still do PT almost every morning. Joints are stiff, hand a bit swollen. I apply gentle steady traction to each joint of the fingers, extend and flex several times, roll the wrist for awhile, do a lymphatic drainage while the arms in the air. Lymphatic system doesn't work right on that side anymore.
Gotta keep adjusting. Gotta care for the body, because who else is gonna?
Take care, CJ.

On the other hand--was very nearsighted as a child, had LASIK surgery in 1998, followed by 15 glorious years without needing glasses. Am now a little farsighted, and it is so frustrating not to be able to just old my embroidery or book closer to read it. This "pull it further away if you aren't wearing your glasses" thing is just so counter-intuitive.

I have a new prescription waiting at the optometrist now and need to go pick glasses.
