This essay is an interesting read because it is such a different perspective to how I feel. I have never once felt anything like guilt with respect to performing femininity. Indeed I can remember saying early in high school that makeup is a very stupid thing--not only does it make people look less attractive than they are with a clean face, it also tastes horrid, so that no one would want to kiss you whilst wearing it, and it exists only to make rich corporate owners richer and serves no other benefit (well, other than making it easier for the audience to see the features on the actor's face in the case of stage-makeup, which looks even more horrid that street makeup, but at least has an actual purpose).

But why the different perspective? Why did I fall naturally into that viewpoint when so many others feel the guilt of which you speak if they don't take the time to make themselves beautiful every day? Is it just that I choose to reject TV in the early 1980's and so haven't seen the ads since then? But I didn't like makeup even before I quit watching TV...
